The Cleveland Bay is the only purebred breed of
Warmblood left in the world and can boast having no draught horse blood in its
ancestry. The only English
breed of Warmblood, Cleveland Bays are horses
that excel in eventing, dressage, driving and showjumping. The breed is known
for its kind and sensible temperament also making it ideal as an adult riding
mount. Tex-Lea Cleveland Bays produce Cleveland Bay Sporthorses suitable for
these disciplines.
The stud is located just outside the picturesque village of Ganmain, about 35 minutes drive from the City of Wagga Wagga in southern New South Wales. Ganmain is famous for producing the best oaten chaff in Australia. The stud is managed by a team of dedicated horse professionals whose goal is to produce both purebred Cleveland Bays and Cleveland Bay Sporthorses. Our registered CB Sporthorses are 50% or more Cleveland Bay. This year's foals will all be 3/4 Cleveland Bay.
History The first Cleveland Bays were imported from England to Australia in the late 1890's by Major Phillip Charley who was a very strong advocate of the Cleveland Bay, using its characteristic longevity and fertility, together with its natural ability for jumping, to improve his cavalry mounts. It was not until 1975 that the Australasian Cleveland Bay Society was formed and stud book records have been kept since that time. The introduction of Cleveland Bay blood to our local stock has produced horses for the competitive arenas in dressage to Grand Prix level, State representatives in jumping, driving and cross-country as well as horses for the pleasure industry and police force.
Worldwide numbers of Cleveland Bays are low. The Rare Breeds Survival Trust UK lists the breed as 'Critical'. The Cleveland Bay has become so rare due to agricultural mechanisation, crossbreeding rather than purebred breeding and war service. During WWII large numbers of Cleveland Bays were shipped off from the UK to the fronts of Europe in service of the Allies. It is interesting to note that there are more pandas on earth than Cleveland Bays! Help us to preserve this fantastic breed of horse.
